Today was a change from our standard routine, it was raining in Welches and changed over to snow at Timberline. The initial report was that the Palmer lift was iced in and on stand-by and only free-skiing was available on the Mile.
Being on stand-by in the Wy'east day lodge is one of the least desirable aspects of summer camp. You get up between 4:30 and 5:00 AM and then wait around the day lodge until they decide if we are going to ski or not. The photo below of Roscoe & Robert says it all.
2 hours after we had arrived at Timberline it is announced that Palmer will be closed for the day and only the Mile would be open for free-skiing. Coaches Jake Olsen & Seppi Steigler stayed and skied with the athletes who opted to free-ski while the rest of us headed back down.
The remainder of the day was spent catching up on extra sleep, laundry and another run up to Govy to pick up skis. After 3 action packed 17 1/2 hour days a break in the action was a welcome change, especially given the fact that the next 2 days the weather looks fantastic.
